Family Values

The Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that British values should be taught as part of the curriculum in the UK. Asked which values he would like to see taught in schools, he said: “I would say freedom, tolerance, respect for the rule of law, belief in personal and social responsibility and respect for British institutions”.

For me this raises an important question, which is: shouldn’t these values be instilled by parents at home? I remember when my children were small we actually did an exercise where we worked out what our family values were. I still have the chart we made. Each of us chose a value that was important and after discussing it, we agreed whether it should go on the list. It’s an enlightening process and a great way (especially for a single parent, as I was then) to foster a sense of family identity and the security that knowing who you are – and what you stand for – brings.

There are more ideas about bringing your family together in my book, “THE SINGLE MUM’S SURVIVAL GUIDE – How To Pick Up The Pieces and Build a Happy New Life”. I have my book launch party on 4th July from 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm at The Steyning Bookshop, High Street, Steyning, West Sussex. If you’d like to meet me in person and get a signed copy of the book, do come along! There’ll be wine and nibbles.
