“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.” Nido Qubein
Single mothers are in the spotlight at the moment. At the recent premiere of new film “The Single Moms Club”, producer and star Tyler Perry and fellow actors discussed how the film’s theme resonated with them. Actor William Levy was himself raised by a single mum. Perry dedicated the film to his aunt, who was also a single mother. He went on to mention Jared Leto’s Oscars speech, in which he thanked his mother for raising him single-handedly.
Don’t let your situation prevent you from living out your dreams. Here (in the first part of my series of blogs on inspirational single mothers) are some real- life examples of single mums who have inspired the world, not to mention their children.
Chris Affleck – Mother of actor and director Ben Affleck, is a teacher who raised her two boys alone to keep them from their father’s terrible drinking problem, teaching them empathy, consideration and humility. She was also Ben’s date to the Academy Awards where he won an award for the film “Good Will Hunting.”
Maya Angelou – Before she became the Reynolds Professorship of American Studies at Wake Forest University, and long before reciting her poem at US President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, Angelou held a number of jobs to help raise her son Guy, including dancing, acting, writing, waiting and waitressing.“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution.” Maya Angelou
Mary Kay Ash – Mary Kay divorced her first husband and lost her second husband to death, but she still managed to create and run one of the largest cosmetics businesses in the world with help from her son.
Halle Berry – is an American actress, producer and model, face of Revlon cosmetics and Versace. She is the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. Halle’s parents divorced when she was four years old; she and her older sister were brought up by her mother. After splitting with her long term boyfriend Gabriel Aubrey, Berry became single mother to their daughter Nahla.“Career is important, but nothing really supersedes my role as a mother. That’s the most important thing I’m going to do in this life at this point.” Halle Berry
Elizabeth Blackwell – America’s first woman doctor. Graduated first in her class in the 1840′s, Blackwell adopted an orphan and raised her as her own daughter. She later opened her own hospital run by an all-female staff.
